ESL

English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction is provided for those whose native language is not English.  Sometimes ESL is referred to as English Language Learning (ELL).  ESL classes, from pre-literacy level to the advanced level, help students develop speaking, listening, reading, writing and grammar skills to communicate effectively in English within their workplaces, communities and families.

Under state and federal law, to receive ESL services from Adult Basic Education providers, a student must be over 16 and not enrolled in the K-12 education system, public or private.  Individuals holding certain types of temporary residence visas such as an exchange student or a tourist visa are not permitted to enroll in free ABE programs.

To find a local ESL program in your area, go the the Adult Literacy Hotline and search online using a zip code or city, or call the Hotline at 1-800-222-1990.
